Tanks, planes, secret bunkers and the legendary Enigma – you will find all this not in a textbook, but in the heart of Kołobrzeg.

The Polish Arms Museum is the second largest military-historical facility in Poland, which turns visiting it into a real adventure.

From medieval armor to Cold War bunkers, history truly comes alive here and surprises at every turn.

Museum of Polish Arms in Kołobrzeg

What is the Polish Arms Museum in Kołobrzeg?

To fully appreciate this place, you need to know that its mission goes much deeper than just collecting old items.

The museum's goal is to actively preserve and promote the material and spiritual heritage of the Polish military , spanning from the early Middle Ages to the late 20th century. Its history, which began on May 8, 1963, is equally fascinating.

Initially, the facility was intended to focus on the history of Kołobrzeg, but after just three years, its heart began to beat to the rhythm of military history. This change proved to be a hit.

What sets the Kołobrzeg museum apart is its visionary approach. Instead of confining history to display cases, the facility embodies the idea of a "battlefield museum."

It leverages the military past of the entire region, creating a network of branches in strategic, historically important locations.

Thanks to this, history comes alive in authentic locations – in a former German hangar, a secret nuclear bunker, or aboard a ship. This makes the entire Kołobrzeg region one large, fascinating exhibit.

Headquarters and permanent exhibition

It's best to start your adventure at the heart of the entire operation – the main complex at 5 Emilii Gierczak Street inKołobrzeg. This is where you'll find the foundation of the entire collection and from here you'll embark on an encounter with a truly captivating story.

The History of the Polish Arms – a cross-section of military history

The main permanent exhibition is a phenomenal journey through a thousand years of Polish military history. The exhibition takes you chronologically from the dawn of our statehood, through medieval battles, the might of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the uprisings, and finally the turbulent 20th century.

Interestingly, the exhibition pavilion itself has a history of its own – it was built with the help of soldiers from the local garrison and opened in 1980, on the 35th anniversary of the battle for the city. This demonstrates how deeply rooted this place is in the local identity.

The exhibition "Colours and Weapons" - weapons and uniforms of Polish soldiers

Prepare for a true feast for the eyes. The museum boasts the richest collection of Polish military uniforms from World War I and II in Poland . These are not ordinary garments—they are silent witnesses to the fate of the people who wore them.

Here you'll see unique uniforms from the Polish Legions, General Haller's Blue Army, and the Greater Poland Uprising. Each button and patch tells its own story of courage and the fight for independence.

Outdoor exhibition – tanks, planes and artillery in the open air

After exploring the interior, it's time for the highlight! Outside, a massive display of heavy military equipment awaits you, sure to make your phone camera red hot.

Powerful tanks, warplanes, and artillery pieces are all within easy reach. Here, you'll see legends like the T-34-85 tank , the mighty ISU-152 self-propelled gun, and machines that once dominated the skies: the MiG-19P fighter and the Su-22 ground-attack aircraft. The scale of these machines is breathtaking, and they're a real hit with families – the kids are thrilled!

Models at the Museum in Kołobrzeg

What are the most valuable museum exhibits?

Among the thousands of objects are true “crown jewels” – exhibits whose stories are as fascinating as the objects themselves.

Enigma – a German cipher machine from World War II

In a place of honor rests the Enigma . Much more than a complex device, it's a symbol of the battle of minds that Polish cryptologists won for the Allies.

The Kołobrzeg example is a four-rotor K model (serial number K574). And what's the story behind its acquisition?

A perfect scenario for a spy movie! Imagine September 1987. A museum employee, carrying a suitcase full of cash, boards an overnight train to Toruń to buy an Enigma at a state-owned antique shop.

The risky, almost conspiratorial mission was successful and one of the most valuable exhibits was brought to Kołobrzeg.

UR wz.35 anti-tank rifle and VIS pistols – small arms from the interwar period

These are two testaments to the genius of Polish engineering. The first is the UR wz. 35 anti-tank rifle – a weapon so effective that it was kept a closely guarded secret. It was the terror of light tanks at the beginning of the war.

The second treasure is the VIS Model 35 pistol , considered one of the finest designs of its type in the world. It is an extremely rare and prized weapon, and the example here is in excellent condition.

Sokół 600 – Polish military motorcycle

Motoring enthusiasts will certainly take a moment to admire the 1938 Sokół 600 RT M211 motorcycle. It is an iconic, all-Polish design by engineer Tadeusz Rudawski, and was destined to become the standard motorcycle of the Polish Army.

What's more, this exhibit is living history – the museum is conducting a restoration project, which shows that the history of this motorcycle is being rewritten.

T-34-85 and Panzerkampfwagen IV – tanks from World War II

This is an absolutely unique opportunity to see two deadly battlefield enemies side by side. On one side, the iconic T-34-85 .

On the other hand, its German rival, the Panzerkampfwagen IV . And this isn't just any tank. It's the only one in Poland that's a verified World War II combat veteran!

Discovered at Kluczewo Airport, it likely served with the elite 10th SS Panzer Division "Frundsberg." Its authenticity makes it a priceless artifact.

Museum departments and their specializations

Once you've soaked up the history at the main building, remember that this is just the beginning. The Polish Arms Museum is a whole empire!

Kołobrzeg City Museum – local history in the Braunschweig Palace

Located in a beautiful Empire-style palace, this branch is the perfect place to understand the soul of the city itself.

The "History of Kołobrzeg" exhibition takes you on a journey from the medieval town, through the times of a mighty fortress, to the golden age of a seaside resort. It perfectly complements the military narrative while revealing the civilian side of Kołobrzeg.

Kołobrzeg Maritime Open-Air Museum – warships and maritime technology

Ahoy, adventure! The Kołobrzeg Maritime Open-Air Museum awaits you at the Fishing Port. Here, you have a unique opportunity to step aboard and explore the interiors of real warships !

The main stars are the patrol vessel ORP "Fala" and the missile boat ORP "Władysławowo." Go below deck and see the crew's cramped quarters, the engine room, and the command posts. It's as close to the life of a sailor as you can get without enlisting!

Podborsko 3001 Cold War Museum – the military heritage of the Polish People's Republic

A few dozen kilometers from Kołobrzeg lies a relic of an entirely different era. Facility 3001 was a secret Soviet nuclear warhead storage facility that has never appeared on any map.

Descend into this anti-nuclear bunker is a chilling experience. You'll see original equipment and feel the atmosphere of nuclear danger. Interestingly, there's no cell service inside, which only adds to the feeling of isolation!

Museum of Aviation and Military Technology in Rogów – aviation and military technology

For aviation enthusiasts, a visit to Rogów is a must. The museum is housed in an original, historic hangar from the 1930s, once part of a German seaplane base.

The architecture itself is impressive, and the collection of airplanes inside and out is a real treat.

Exhibition in Kołobrzeg

Commemoration of the Battle of Kołobrzeg

The Battle of Kołobrzeg in March 1945 is a key element of the city's identity, and the museum is the guardian of this memory.

An exhibition dedicated to the battles of March 1945

In the main building, you'll find a special section of the exhibition dedicated to these fierce battles. Maps, weapons, and soldier memorabilia bring to life the drama of those days.

It is here that every March great anniversary celebrations are organised, culminating in a spectacular historical re-enactment of the "Battle of Kołobrzeg" on the beach.

Souvenirs donated by General Waldemar Skrzypczak

The museum also pays tribute to contemporary heroes. A moving example of this is the exhibition of memorabilia from the late Lieutenant General Waldemar Skrzypczak.

The most personal exhibits are his two uniforms from the period when he commanded the Polish contingent in Iraq . Publicly displayed after his death, they constitute a powerful tribute to the Polish soldier.

Educational activities and temporary exhibitions

This is not an institution that rests on its laurels. It is a thriving center that is constantly evolving.

Educational programs for schools and organized groups

The facility offers a rich educational program, offering museum lessons and workshops. It's a living history that engages and inspires younger generations, showing that learning doesn't have to be boring.

Temporary exhibitions as a supplement to the permanent exhibition

Permanent exhibitions are regularly supplemented by temporary exhibitions. This is a great reason to return to the museum. Even if you've been here before, there's always the chance to discover something completely new and surprising.

Archaeology and historical research

Few people know that the museum is also a living science center that conducts its own fascinating research projects.

Maritime archaeology – finds from the bottom of the Baltic Sea

Museum staff engage in maritime archaeology, examining wrecks and finds from the Baltic Sea floor. Each recovered fragment adds another piece to the historical puzzle, allowing for a deeper understanding of the past.

Battlefield and aviation archaeology – traces of the military past

The museum team also conducts research on land, uncovering material traces of ancient battles and plane crashes. This is true detective work that helps save priceless artifacts from oblivion.
