How to Order a Taxi in England?

The UK categorically divides the market into licensed black cabs (Hackney Carriages) andPrivate Hire Vehicles (PHVs ).

Just look at how diverse your options for getting transport are depending on the type of car you choose:

  • Directly on the street: Only classic taxis are allowed to do this (always look for a lit light on the roof).

  • At designated taxi ranks: Safe zones at stations and in city centers where authorized vehicles depart.

  • By telephone hotline: Traditional way of booking in advance, necessary for minicabs (PHVs).

  • Via the operator's website: An extremely convenient option for those planning a trip directly from their hotel or office.

  • Via mobile apps: The favorite solution for cashless payments and precise live driver tracking.

Taxi Price List and Tariffs (Daytime, Nighttime and Holiday Tariffs)

The final bill depends primarily on whether you get into a taxi with a meter or choose a minicab with a pre-determined price.

In the case of classic black taxis, maximum rates are strictly regulated by local authorities (City Councils), and the system is strict at specific times of the day:

  • Day Rate: Basic, cheapest option valid during standard business hours.

  • Evening and night tariff: Usually activated after 8:00 or 10:00 p.m., significantly increasing the cost of each kilometer.

  • Early morning fare: Covering journeys before dawn, often treated by taximeters as the night fare.

  • Weekend Rate: One of the highest rates, usually starting from Friday evening to Monday.

  • Bank Holidays: On days like Christmas and New Year's Day you will pay double (in London the famous "Tariff 3" is activated).

Airports Served by Taxis

Absolutely all major airports in England are excellently connected by professional transport services.

The authorities of these facilities very rigorously separate zones for cars caught on the go from those ordered via smartphone.

Thanks to this, you will be able to find your vehicle without getting lost in the following points:

  • Heathrow (T2, T3, T4, T5): Provides official black cab ranks in front of the terminals and PHV areas hidden in the Short Stay car parks.

  • Gatwick: Has excellent parking facilities at the North and South Terminals, supported by clearly marked Express Pick-Up zones.

  • Stansted: Safely directs passengers to dedicated pick-up areas, including those at the Short Stay Car Park Orange.

  • Luton: Has authorised Hackney Carriages and Drop Off/Pick Up areas located close to the terminal or at Terminal Car Park 2.

  • Regional and smaller airports (Manchester, Birmingham, London City): They work closely with local private companies, allowing you to book your journey for a fixed fee directly in the arrivals hall.

Licensing and Regulation (Public Carriage Office and The Knowledge Exam)

My observations show that the English passenger transport market is extremely strictly controlled at every level.

London boasts the oldest regulated system in the world. Every prospective chauffeur must undergo thorough DBS checks and rigorous medical examinations.

Interestingly, the legendary "The Knowledge" exam requires drivers to master tens of thousands of streets completely from memory.

Additionally, the law requires that all London black cabs be 100% wheelchair accessible.

Alternative Transportation Options (Uber and Other Transportation Platforms)

Alongside traditional corporations, ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Bolt have effectively revolutionized the British landscape. They operate entirely legally under private hire vehicle (PHV) licenses.

They are a great option, giving passengers the convenience of real-time route tracking and exceptional ease of booking.

However, you need to be careful with surge pricing systems – during peak hours, apps can be significantly more expensive, while local taxi companies often guarantee consistent, fair rates.

Additional Fees and Tips (Rules and Guidelines for Passengers)

Before you carelessly slam your car door, you need to familiarise yourself with the specifics of hidden costs and British etiquette.

Your final bill is rarely limited to the taximeter readings alone, as dense infrastructure imposes a range of taxes on drivers. Be prepared for the following very common costs and rules:

  • Tipping (longer journeys): Not mandatory, but it is customary to leave 10% to 15% of the bill as a thank you.

  • Tipping (short distances): On fast, urban routes, it's most convenient to simply round up the amount to the nearest pound.

  • Oversized luggage: A standard suitcase travels for free, but large items requiring a van or 8-seater bus increase the fare.

  • Drop-off fees: Collected at the entrance to the terminal (e.g. £7 at Heathrow, Luton and Stansted, and £10 at Gatwick).

  • Congestion Charge and ULEZ: Driving into central London often incurs a hefty £12.50 surcharge for the Low Emission Zone (unless your car has an exemption).

  • Fines for soiling: Operators are penalising passengers severely for damaging or soiling the interior, issuing bills of up to £75.
