Women's Day in Gdańsk

Let me start by writing something very important: this is not a guide for men. This is not a guide for couples either. This time I decided to write a post especially and exclusively for my dear readers.

Where did this idea come from? Basically, it was supposed to be another post written on the occasion of another holiday. But while doing a little research, I noticed one thing: most similar guides focus on how to spend money on gifts, buy flowers, and where to go to a restaurant.

Meanwhile, looking at the statistics and also observing what the streets of our cities look like, it is easy to notice one thing: there are more and more single women in their twenties and thirties, or women waiting for their husbands working on business trips. And does this mean that this beautiful holiday is reserved only for couples? Nothing could be further from the truth…

Dear Reader, today, on the occasion of your holiday, I am taking you to the world of inspiration.

Women's Day on March 8 in Gdańsk

Women's Day on March 8, is it really a relic of the Polish People's Republic?

At the beginning, however, I wouldn't be myself if I didn't touch on one topic. Women's Day is not a communist holiday. True, it is associated in this way, but attributing this beautiful holiday to communists, in my humble opinion, depreciates it. Below you have a historical outline…

On March 8 every year, we celebrate Women's Day, which, contrary to popular belief, is not an invention of the Polish People's Republic era, nor is it exclusively related to this period. Unfortunately, sometimes even the best intentions can unintentionally reinforce certain stereotypical perceptions of women.

In Europe, this holiday is celebrated on March 8, although in other countries, such as Tunisia, it has a different date - August 13. Interestingly, in 1965 the USSR announced this day as a non-working day to celebrate women's contribution to building international friendship and striving for peace.

The history of Women's Day dates back to ancient Rome, where it was a day dedicated to the goddess Juno, the patron saint of women. On this day, women prayed for marital happiness, and men gave them gifts. This tradition comes from the Roman Matronalia - a holiday dedicated to motherhood and female nature.

This holiday, celebrated in the form we know today, has its roots in workers' movements at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1857, New York cotton factory workers organized a strike, demanding shorter working hours and equal pay.

The first official celebration of National Women's Day took place in 1909 in the USA. A year later, the socialist international decided to celebrate this holiday globally to promote women's rights, including the right to vote.

In Poland, Women's Day became popular after World War II, although it was originally celebrated on March 19. The date of March 8 comes from the Russian women's strikes of 1913 and 1917, as well as from the fight of suffragettes in Great Britain for political rights.

The 1945 United Nations Charter, affirming the principle of gender equality, was a milestone in the pursuit of equal rights. The UN has played a key role in developing strategies and programs to promote the status of women over the years.

In Poland, especially during the Polish People's Republic, Women's Day was celebrated on a large scale. In schools and workplaces, women received small gifts, such as tights or coffee.

What to do on Women's Day?

In a slightly perverse way, I will try to write as a man what you can do on Women's Day, when your boyfriend has just screwed up, gone to work or when you are simply an independent single woman. You see, this will not be a guide for couples or for your partner who is looking for an idea on how to please you.

So: your friends are busy and you have no idea how to celebrate this holiday? Nothing is lost, in fact, March 8 is a perfect opportunity to do something for yourself, something extremely feminine.
